چکیده

Sponges have long been considered as “living hotels” due to the great diversity and abundance of other taxonomic groups often found in association with them. are dominant components benthic communities Levant Sea; especially recently discovered mesophotic sponge grounds off coast Israel. However, almost no data exist regarding their associated macrofauna. The current study sought identify macrofauna massive sponges along Israeli Mediterranean coast; compare role sponges, ecosystem engineers, or hotels,” both shallow-water habitats. Sixty-four specimens, from 10 different species, were collected shallow habitats by SCUBA diving Remotely Operated Vehicle, respectively. Sponge volume was estimated, specimens dissected, identified. Our results reveal that supported a diverse assemblage A total 61 taxa found, including species reported for first time clear, differentiation existed structure between two habitats, which is mainly attributed four (two polychaetes, crustacean, brittle star). trophic composition remained stable across No correlation fauna community parameters. highest richness habitat, where also higher. In contrast, greater endobiont density recorded may be limiting factor lower abundance. findings emphasize importance suggest an important contribute biodiversity these regions.

Synthetic tsunamis along the Israeli coast.

The new mathematical model for tsunami evolution by Tobias & Stiassnie (Tobias & Stiassnie 2011 J. Geophys. Res. Oceans 116, C06026) is used to derive a synthetic tsunami database for the southern part of the Eastern Mediterranean coast. Information about coastal tsunami amplitudes, half-periods, currents and inundation levels is presented.

Species composition, richness and nestedness of lizard assemblages from Restinga habitats along the brazilian coast.

Habitat fragmentation is well known to adversely affect species living in the remaining, relatively isolated, habitat patches, especially for those having small range size and low density. This negative effect has been critical in coastal resting habitats. We analysed the lizard composition and richness of restinga habitats in 16 restinga habitats encompassing three Brazilian states (Rio de Jan...

Seeing Red: Alien species along the Mediterranean coast of Israel

An overview is presented of the metazoan alien biota recorded from the Mediterranean coast of Israel. Of the 296 alien species, 284 have been introduced from the Red Sea/Indo West-Pacific through the Suez Canal. A brief history of the research on introduced species along the Israeli coast is presented along with the list of species, and their ecological and economic impacts are discussed.
